Why Meditation is Not Just About Attending Workshops
Attending meditation workshops can help to provide guidance and support in developing a regular meditation practice, which can lead to positive changes in one’s life. That said, if you do not have the habit of cultivating meditation in your daily life, even attending workshops and retreats will not do you any good.
Here are 5 things you should know about the practice of meditation beyond attending meditation workshops.

“The Essence of Life Meditation Workshop was developed by me to provide a foundation for those who want to know more about meditation.”
If you have been following my posts on my social media account @iammichaelteh, I share a lot about returning to your true nature, seeking happiness within, and guarding your heart with love and kindness. All of this keeps us grounded and ultimately gives us so much clarity to achieve the life we truly want, or as I always call it, a life of higher potential.
Workshops are generally meant as a guided tool to facilitate an individual’s growth and learning. However, without daily cultivation of the practice, one can only achieve limited growth. The Essence of Life Meditation Workshop was developed by me to provide a foundation for those who want to know more about meditation. In this workshop, which takes place over two days, the philosophical understanding of meditation and the techniques of meditation are taught.
Since the inception of this workshop, I have guided over 150 students around the world in over 14 workshops. And at every workshop I lead, and even after the workshop, I encourage my students to never stop finding their true selves by practicing meditation in their daily lives – no matter how hectic life can be. I do not motivate them, because motivation cannot last, but I encourage them to make this their daily habit. Daily habits are sustainable!

That said, I would like to share 5 reasons why meditation is not just about attending workshops.
1. Meditation is an Ongoing Practice
Meditation is one way to improve your quality of life. Have you ever heard of the possibility of improving the quality of your life by eating healthy for a week or a month? You have the clear answer. If you attended my workshop, we spent the first day understanding the techniques of breathing. This practice is important because when you know how to breathe properly, you can focus your mind and become more aware of your surroundings, your choice of words, or even the way you speak to the people around you. Techniques are tools, and if you start practicing them every day, they will become part of your routine. The more you learn to control or be aware of your mind, the more you can consciously control what your mind focuses on and how you respond to it.
2. Meditation is a Community
I have found that people who gather to meditate develop a sense of community in which they often feel comfortable. It’s like a safe space for them. I really like this part of my meditation workshop because we all come with the same intention and goal, which is to seek our true selves without judgment. Since workshops can provide a sense of belonging to a protected community, I will always encourage you to continue meditating with your group of trusted people as everyone continues their life journey.
3. Meditation is Not a Trend
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, mindfulness or meditation practices have taken the world by storm as people begin to take note of the benefits of this ancient practice. As the term “trend” implies, I do not want us to jump on the trendy bandwagon and throw away the practice before we understand it better after attending a workshop. As I said earlier, meditation is an ongoing practice, a tool that accompanies you on your life’s journey. In fact, attending the same meditation workshop several times will provide you with a deeper understanding and insight, while continuing your own search for meditation.
4. Meditation Brings You Long-term Health Benefits
Studies have shown that meditation has several long-term health benefits, such as stress and anxiety reduction, depression management, lowering blood pressure, strengthening the immune system, improving memory, regulating mood, and more. We all know how damaging or uncomfortable it can be when we experience health issues. While we cannot prevent feeling overwhelmed by anxiety and stress in particular, we can ground ourselves better with meditation. Knowing how to respond to situations with the knowledge of meditation outweighs regular experiences of these unhealthy habits or problems that can pose a risk to your health in the long run. As the saying goes, do not wait until it’s too late.
5. Meditate in Your Safe Space
Although meditating in a community brings tremendous support and benefits, we all know that at the end of the day we need a little space of quiet for ourselves. So, I encourage you to create a safe space at home where you can really focus on meditation and quiet your mind. Supplement this space with guided meditation aids to further enhance your experience. Think of this space as not only a place that calms you, but also one that strengthens you. If you’d like to explore some of the guided meditation tools, check out the meditation kit I developed and put together myself. These tools help me every day, whether I am meditating personally or running my meditation workshops.
I hope these 5 tips are useful to you and give you an understanding of what happens when you participate in my meditation workshop. I’ll close with my quote, “Our True Nature is of high moral virtues, and our True Nature is peaceful, tranquil, and nothing but Love and Light.” Enjoy meditation!
